Event description

Join us for an eclectic trio of short talks on topics as far-flung as mapping the New South Wales coastline, and creating a rock opera performed by giant mechanical heads. Linked by the central theme of data, these talks will reveal some of the curious projects going on behind the scenes at 107.

Speakers:

Nicole Larkin | The Wild Edge Sydney based designer and installation artist Nicole Larkin will be sharing her work on The Wild Edge, a research project mapping and recording every ocean pool in NSW. Ultimately she hopes her work will contribute to better design practices and future proofing for these Australian cultural icons.

Luke & Wendy Bacon | Investigating WestConnex

Wendy Bacon is journalist, activist, and academic. Luke Bacon is an independent designer and software developer, researching inclusive design processes in the community law sector. Together they are using open source tools, DIY kits, and web scraping to investigate the environmental impact of Australia's biggest infrastructure project.

Mark Bolotin | Synarcade Audiovisuals

Visitors at TEDX Sydney this year got to see something a little out of the ordinary – a rock-opera performed by a 12-headed, mechanical Creature Choir. At the touch of a button, the Creatures can sing, spout poetry, or beat box, resulting in a performance that is eerie, futuristic and playful. In this special talk, learn about the process behind the invention, from inspiration through coding and hardware design, and get a sneak peak at the installation version coming to 107 in October. Bar open from 6pm.
